Important Decisions to be Made This Summer for the Fire Station 1 Project
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 14, 2026
WESTWOOD – July and August will be critical months for the Fire Station 1 (FS1) Project as important information and decisions will be made by the Fire Station 1 Steering Committee and Select Board.
The FS1 Steering Committee is actively considering three sites:
637 High Street (the site of the existing Fire Station 1)
Parcel 14-131 (often referred to as the site behind Starbucks)
72 Deerfield Avenue (the former Deerfield Elementary School property)
During the month of July, the FS1 Steering Committee and project team are focusing on refining the programming requirements for the new station and developing conceptual-level site plans and rough order of magnitude conceptual cost comparisons for each of the three locations.
This information is expected to be presented to the committee during its meeting on Monday, July 27, at 9:45 a.m. at 50 Carby Street. This will be a hybrid meeting, and information on how to participate will be shared at westwoodma.gov/fs1.
Residents will have the opportunity to weigh in on the conceptual-level site plans and rough order of magnitude conceptual cost comparison during two public forums on July 29 and 30. The July 29 forum will be in-person in the Westwood High School Auditorium (200 Nahatan Street) at 6:00 p.m. The following day, July 30, at 7:00 p.m., there will be a virtual public forum, and the Zoom link will be shared at westwoodma.gov/fs1. Both of these forums will be recorded by Westwood Media Center. In addition to these public forums, the FS1 Steering Committee will be launching a survey and holding informal Community Conversations. Keep an eye on our website and social media for the details.
Providing public input is imperative at this juncture as the FS1 Steering Committee is expected to make a recommendation on its preferred site at its August 7 hybrid meeting at 9:45 a.m. at 50 Carby Street. After the recommendation, the committee and project team will work over the following weeks and months on further refining the project scope and budget.
A community vote on the project may occur this fall, including:
A Town Meeting vote in late October
A debt exclusion vote at the November 3 election
Future Fire Station 1 updates will be published on westwoodma.gov/fs1 and on social media on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/WestwoodFS1FireStationProject, X at https://x.com/TownofWestwood, and Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/westwoodma_official/.
