Dear Westwood Residents,
On behalf of the Select Board, Fire Department, Fire Station 1 Advisory and Community Engagement Committee, and Town staff, thank you.
Based on unofficial election results at the close of polls, the residents of Westwood approved the debt exclusion for the Fire Station 1 project, completing the two required votes following the overwhelming support demonstrated at the Town Meeting on October 26th. This decision represents a significant investment in the future of our community and in the safety of the residents, businesses, and first responders who rely on this facility every day.
Today’s vote is the culmination of a year-long community process that included public forums, neighborhood meetings, committee discussions, surveys, hearings, and countless conversations among neighbors, volunteers, staff, and elected officials. More than 90 public meetings and engagement opportunities helped shape the new FS1.
We are grateful to the many residents who took the time to participate, ask difficult questions, offer suggestions, and share differing perspectives. Whether you supported the project or raised concerns about it, your involvement helped shape a stronger, more thoughtful proposal. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the members of the Fire Station 1 Advisory and Community Engagement Committee, whose dedication, transparency, and countless volunteer hours were instrumental in developing a proposal responsive to the community's needs and priorities.
While today's vote is an important milestone, there is still significant work ahead.
The project will now advance into design development, followed by public permitting anticipated in the spring of 2027. Bidding and construction are expected to follow, with construction anticipated to begin in late 2027 and completion projected for 2029.
As the project moves forward, the Town remains committed to transparency, continued community engagement, and responsible stewardship of the investment residents have authorized. We recognize the responsibility that comes with this approval and are committed to careful oversight of the project's budget and schedule, minimizing impacts on the surrounding Deerfield neighborhood, and keeping residents informed throughout the process. Project information will be regularly updated and shared to www.westwoodfs1.com
Thank you for participating in this important community decision and for your continued engagement in the future of Westwood.
Sincerely,
The Town of Westwood
Note – official election results will be uploaded to the Town’s website once certified by the Town Clerk.
